Description

It is a 1939 Daimler Light Straight 8 Sports Saloon by Vanden Plas. This is an incredibly rare car being one of only six made with the 4 litre Straight Eight cylinder engine. The car is listed in " Daimler Days Vol. 2" Daimlers were the first choice of the Royal Family at the time and is a far superior car to both the Bentley and Rolls-Royce of the same period (Well Arguably it certainly outdoes a Derby Bentley in both style engine quality and useability. It is also one of the most beautiful and racy Sports Saloons we have seen. It has only had two owners in the last 45 years and has been owned by a well known collector of the marque. Interior The inside is totally original with original headlining leather and woodwork all of which would benefit from refurbishment to make this a truly top car. The carpets are also all Ok and for an old car the Interior is very nice indeed. All the dials and instruments work as they should and there is nothing that needs addressing immediately. Exterior The body is mostly aluminium with steel front wings and was partly repainted approximately 40 years ago with the top colour (brown) still being original. The car has some large paint chips removed and a small amount of minor knocks but has not been messed with.Wheels are completely rebuilt with new tubes. The chrome is excellent all round. This is a coachbuilt Pillarless body by Vanden Plas very rare and has perfect shut lines with perfect wood framing having been stored in excellent conditions. Mechanical The engine has been completely rebuilt in 2000 including radiator starting motor and dynamo. The car has a discreet electric water pump fitted below the radiator. A stainless steel exhaust and brake overhaul. New cables and petrol pump. The suspension has been overhauled and the steering joints replaced. The Wilson Preselector gear box is good and smooth and pulls away in any gear The Straight 8 is totally aluminium and has been fully rebuilt including new pistons etc and is not yet run in She performs superbly. Summary This is an incrdibly rare and valuable car it is a fine example which won a top award in 2003 at a national rally. The car has been the subject of a feature in the Driving Member outlining the engine rebuild and has attended several Daimler Rallies over the past 30 years the car is as clean underside as it is on top. The Eight Cylinder engine and superb chassis make this superior to Bentleys of the era and the racy body by Vanden Plas makes this a really special car. We have only found one other example on the market and that is over L20k.
